Summary & Suggestion

A. Purpose of Practice

    The SEA Teacher Project or "Pre-service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia" is a project that aims to provide opportunities for pre-service teacher students from universities in Southeast Asia to gain teaching experience (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia.

    The purpose of the teaching practicum is to provide an opportunity for us as prospective teachers to apply the educational theories that have been learned, such as teaching strategies, classroom management, and assessment of learning outcomes. Through hands-on experience, we prospective teachers can build their confidence in teaching and interacting with students and develop the professional attitudes necessary in the world of education.

    Here I learned a lot from the classroom teachers at Future School, subject teachers, student exchange friends from other countries, and friends from Vietnam. The important point that I learned in this practicum is that teachers are required to better understand individual differences in students' abilities, backgrounds, and learning needs, as well as how to adjust teaching methods to be effective for various groups of students.

B. Producers of Practice

    The duration of this practicum is 1 month which is divided into 3 sessions. The first session or the first week is an observation week where we make observations at the school where we teach, namely Future School. We coordinate with school officials, classroom teachers, regarding the curriculum used, lesson plans, and methods used in the learning process. Not only listening, we also make lesson plans according to the format that applies in schools. The second and third weeks are the time to conduct a classroom teaching demonstration where we teach students in a class that has been determined by the school, in this case Future School. The fourth week is an evaluation time where school teachers provide assessments, suggestions and input as material to become better in teaching in the future. On the last Sunday, a closing ceremony was also held to appreciate the student delegation who have served in the country. During the week we also have the opportunity to visit tourist attractions or historical places such as museums, beaches, malls, souvenir shops and various other recreational places.The goal is so that we can explore many places and create beautiful memories that will not be forgotten.

C. Outcomes of Practice

    This student exchange activity certainly provides a lot of benefits for me, not only in the field of pursuit but communication skills with people from other countries. I never expected to be in my current position,  but when I was in the classroom, this reality made me realize that I had to do my best to dare to go through this process well, adding to my experience in the field of teaching, especially at the international level. I will feel many benefits in the future when i return to my homr country, Indonesia. The various benefits that i have obtained from this activity are ;

  1. I was able to practice my English skills from limited to better. To be honest, I learned English on my own but didn't think I could go this far in teaching in an international class.
  2. Broadened my horizons of different teaching methods, education systems, and learning cultures, so that I could develop a broader global understanding.
  3. I was able to learn more about the culture of the country where i teach, which is  Vietnam, which helped me understand and appreciate cultural diversity. It also gives me the ability to teach inclusive values and embrace differences in the classroom.
  4. interact with students and peers from different cultures, helping me develop tolerance, empathy, and a better understanding of differences. This is an important skill, both in my personal and professional life.

D. The challenge of Practice

     The challenge that was very felt for me was the language difference which made it quite difficult for me to communicate with my Vietnamese friends, as well as the students at school. Vietnam is a country that makes English a foreign language, so it is still a little difficult to communicate using English with some people. I am also not used to hearing the Vietnamese version of English, which is a little different pronunciation. However, that doesn't mean it's an obstacle for me to complete this program well, I still try to understand them communicate and use body language so that what I convey can be conveyed well. In addition, another challenge I faced was that the Grade 1 elementary school students at Future School were smart children, so I had to be able to adjust their abilities and find various learning activities that could keep them from getting bored in the classroom and being creative. Try to find a model and learning method that is fun for the children, and a good psychological approach with them.

E. Overall Impression

    Honestly, I really enjoy the student exchange activities to Vietnam because I get a lot of interesting things every day, and I meet a lot of great people from various backgrounds. The cultural differences between the two countries between Vietnam and Indonesia amazed me even though I had experienced culture shock. But it is only natural that we should be able to tolerate and adapt to their culture without eliminating the culture of our own country. I am very proud of myself for being a part of the SEAMEO Sea Teacher Batch 10. I thought that people who could migrate abroad were only for the rich, but it wasn't because SEAMEO gave me the opportunity to gain a lot of experience. Of course this is a blessing for me because the dream of 5 years ago has come true. One thing I believe in is that "Allah never exchanges the fortune of his servants, every mass has his people and every person has his masses". For that, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to SEAMEO for the golden opportunity that has been given to me. We hope that SEAMEO will always succeed in being at the forefront of the young generation who contribute to Indonesia and the progress of education in Indonesia.

F. Suggestion for Future Improvement

    From my point of view, there is no suggestion for further improvement because until now I am very grateful to be part of SEAMEO. I just want to thank Dong Thap University, Vietnam for accepting me.  I would also like to thank all educators and education staff as well as 1st grade students of Future School who have given me a golden opportunity to develop into a professional teacher in the future. I would also like to thank Halu Oleo University for trusting me to be a UHO delegate to Vietnam. Thank you so much to my Indonesian friends who have been my best environment here, I am never lonely and alone thanks to all of you. Thank you also to my extended family, who have been my best support system to have the courage to take steps to join this program, as well as my close friends who always supporst all the positive activities that i undertake.
